about

So I wrote this song because I ran into a friend Kendra Morris, who's a very talented singer, while she was bartending in Williamsburg. I had an idea on the way home that I should write some tunes for her to sing, maybe even some duets, and we could have a side project band. I woke up the next day and was surprisingly still pretty inspired so out came this song about a bartender, obviously a much exaggerated emotional take on the separation she would feel being constantly trapped behind the bar. This is the recording I made to show her, which incidentally has me singing to a man I'm in love with. It's a little weird, especially since my grandma likes it so much. Anyway, tonight I'm going to see Kendra's new band and propose that she consider this whole project. We shall see.

lyrics

And if I had the keys to your heart
I wouldn't have to play the part
I could put all the bottles away
And come back to the other side again

But this bar is where I stand
And the most I'll ever do is shake your hand
And I'll try not to care
And pretend you're not there
All while looking through my hair
For your stare

I won't let anyone see me cry
As your friends make you say goodbye
They want to take you away down the street
Where there's another lovely bartender to meet

But this bar is where I'll stay
And now in comes the drunk from yesterday
And I'll try not to care
And pretend he's not there
All while looking through my hair
For his stare

He wants a drink
I stop to think
What joy does doing this ever bring
Another Coke
Another Jack
I'd like to say I won't but I'll be back

But if I had the keys to your heart
I wouldn't have to play the part
I could give you more than smile
And maybe get to sit down for a while
