about

When I was growing up in England I had a wonderful babysitter named Gail. She was 16 and lived next door. Conveniently she was really interested in working with kids and very natural at it so my mom would rely on her to watch me while she was busy tending to my dad, who was very ill at the time. For several years I believe, Gail nursed me through many childhood afflictions and really became a part of my upbringing. We moved to the states and haven't kept in touch as we should. I do know, indirectly, that she developed an unfortunate problem. She started complaining of sicknesses and was often hospitalized, but could never get a diagnosis. Last I heard, this became an overwhelming complex. and she had managed to get government disability money since she couldn't work. It just so happened that my parents mentioned her while I was home recently and I began to wonder how she is now. Maybe she'll find this song. Maybe she'll find it upsetting, but I really hope not as I mean it to be an homage to her.

lyrics

You were young
You used to live next door
Had a way with kids for sure
So my mom asked you to babysit
And many many times you did
But soon we had to move away
In the next door house you stayed
And you started feeling so unwell
Though the doctors couldn't tell

Oh Gail oh Gail
Are you still so pale?

You had a brother
He would misbehave
They said it was attention he craved
But you never did a thing at all
You were at your father's beck and call
You sat up in that smokey house
In the corner like a Cheshire mouse
And you started so unwell
Though the doctors couldn't tell

Oh Gail oh Gail
Are you still so pale?

Haven't seen you in a long long time
Do you wonder bout this life of mine?
In the big United States
You would think we had different fates
But I bet to your surprise
We have both been paralyzed
Cause I started feeling so unwell
Though the doctors couldn't tell

Oh Gail oh Gail
Now we both have failed
